Welcome back! I’m so glad you’re here ☺️
Today I want to chat a bit about how I wind down each night for a better and restful sleep. By no means have I perfected this (serial nighttime Instagram scroller right here 🙋🏻♀️), but I’ve certainly tried to create a routine each evening to help me get the best sleep I can. It’s so important to me to get good rest. Naturally I’m just a very tired person and I’ve diagnosed myself with extreme fatigue (thanks, WebMD!). I also struggle with insomnia when I’m on prednisone for my autoimmune disease, which I’m currently on. Creating a nighttime routine for me is important and imperative for a good nights sleep.
My Nighttime Routine for a Better and Restful Sleep
Put my phone on Do Not Disturb.
This is something I’ve started doing as I’ve gotten more active on social media because the notifications are nonstop, all day. I turn my Do Not Disturb on around 7:30/8 pm to give myself a bit of time to release the anxiety of checking my notifications and to help me ease into bedtime mode. Don’t worry, your alarm will still go off in the morning!
Drink a cup of hot tea.
I LOVE tea, thanks to my husband! He’s a tea drinker and has totally gotten me on the nighttime tea train. My favorite tea to drink is chai tea with almond milk. I love the Oregon brand chai and I drink the sugar free and the original. I’ve recently tried the Tazo Vanilla Caramel chai because my local Target is always out of the Oregon original. It settles my mind and puts me in the cozy zone, perfect for bedtime. It’s also just a really calming, therapeutic experience to lounge on the sofa with my husband, our pups and a cup of warm tea in my cozy pajamas.
Get in my softest pajamas.
I am the epitome of a pajama mama (is that a thing?). I love wearing cozy, soft pajamas. My favorites are from Target and Victoria’s Secret, and I wear them several days in a row (is that gross?). However you like to sleep at night, I totally recommend investing in a few pajama sets that you can rotate. Also, it’s just cute to wear pajamas and wake up in something cozy, especially during the winter months.
Brush my teeth, wash my face & take out my contacts.
Pretty simple, to the point. Just basic hygiene and self-care.
Turn on my diffuser.
I’m obsessed with my oil diffuser. I only have one oil scent, and I love using it to relax when I finally make it to bed. When I was really sick last winter because of my autoimmune disease, this was a huge lifesaver for me. It helps put my mind at ease and relax enough to fall asleep.
Don’t pick up my phone once I get into bed.
I know this one might be difficult for a lot of people, especially those who have a job that requires you to be on-call (like my husband). But, if you can help it, put your phone on DND and leave it alone until you wake up in the morning. It will help you go to sleep, and stay asleep. I’m not perfect with this, especially if I have a lot going on and if I can see that my phone is blowing up. But, I do try my best to keep the scrolling in bed to a bare minimum.
Relax. Rest. Repeat.
Getting a restful sleep is not only good for our productivity, but it also improves every facet of our lives. From thinking more clearly, being positive throughout the day and not agitated at the little things, to being able to have enough energy to keep up with life’s busy schedules.
My hope for you this year is that you start taking better care of yourself, and shutting off when you need to. Regardless of your line of work or if you have a full house, taking “me” time is crucial to our survival, happiness and success. Don’t feel guilty! Do things that help you sleep better. Do things that make your days happier and easier.
